  • Featured Naples Florida Gallery:

    452 Bayfront Place, Naples Florida

    Selected Paintings Available
    at The Weatherburn Gallery

Classical Realism paintings by Deborah Elmquist, classical oil painter and contemporary realist, are now available at the prestigious  Weatherburn Gallery located within the stylish Bayfront Place in Naples Florida.

Mr. Roger Weatherburn Backer, President and gallery founder , and Ms Heather  Begley, Executive Director, personally selected the paintings now on displayed in the main gallery area.  "These works are a very nice addition to our gallery and will be appreciated by our clients who prefer a classical style of art for their homes," Mr. Backer said.

Elmquist's classical style of oil painting bridges the Flemish and Venetian Schools in that she incorporates into her works both the hard edge quality of the Flemish School and the softer, lost edges and "air" of the Venetian School of oil painting.   Her works also incorporate the technique of selective focus while at the same time maintaining the fine detail traditionally found in classical realism.

"I am known for my personal style of still life painting and I have a significant following in the genera subject matter.  Even though I have worked towards fresher brush strokes and a looser more spontaneous painterly look, I truly love painting detail and the chiaroscuro style.  That is where my heart is and I always seem to return to my roots and the painting style of the Old Masters," she said in a recent interview.

Currently working on new fine art pieces incorporating the human form with fabrics in the classical style, Deborah is looking forward to a busy art season.  She is also working on a new collection of still life fine art pieces that should be ready for the summer gallery openings.

The Weatherburn Gallery is located at 452 Bayfront Place, located at the junction of Goodlette-Frank Road and Third Ave. South in greater Naples Florida.  (Editor's Note: check the contacts page for detailed gallery information.)

Mr. Roger Weatherburn Backer Founded by Mr. Roger Weatherburn Backer in November 1998 the gallery began with one small showroom located on Broad Avenue South in Old Naples.  The Weatherburn Gallery expanded steadily becoming what is today a true art destination, now occupying a 3,000 sq. ft. showroom in Bayfront Place, a Mediterranean style plaza offering fine art and fine dinning in an elegant waterside setting overlooking Naples Harbor.

Mr. Baker hosts the "Art Scene" radio program on Naples radio station WGUF, and is a frequent speaker to local clubs and associations.  In addition, he lectures at the Florida Gulfcoast University Renaissance Academy and is a contributing feature writer on the arts and travel for several area magazines.  Mr. Baker is an active supporter of his community serving as board member, director, or chairman of many community associations.  His participation includes the Naples Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Naples Association, the Naples Bayfront Merchant's Association, and the United Arts Council of Collier County, among others.

Ms Heather BegleyWith the Weatherburn Gallery from its' inception, Ms Heather Begley, BFA-Art History, Executive Director, leads the gallery staff coordinating daily administration, gallery shows, art tours, and gallery related special events.  She is also active in the greater Naples area arts community and coordinates and participates in the gallery's outreach programs to present arts related subjects to local schools, art clubs, and local associations.

  • Elmquist to focus on gallery representation; suspends art fair participation

"I can't do it all" said Deborah Elmquist, oil painter and representational artist.  "The demand for my work and my heavy personal schedule means that I must make some changes.  After all, I'm not getting any younger either and outdoor art shows are heavy, hard work all by them selves."

Given the choice between weekend travel and painting in her studio, Deborah found the decision easy to make.  "I love to paint; that is what I am all about.  So I would rather paint than travel all over the place to sell my work.  I'll leave the selling to the professionals. There are really good galleries available.  I'll just paint and paint and they (gallery owners) can do the selling.  I think that is a good trade off.  And if I do an outdoor art show it will need to be locals.  I have a responsibility and commitment to support my local art community."

Deborah was again selected to display and participation in an OPA sponsored art event, the 2007 Oil Painters of America Easter Regional Show in progress at The Weatherburn Gallery, Naples Florida.  In 2005, she was selected to display and participation in the OPA National Show in Chicago.

Deborah's art is appreciated by art lovers in England, Germany, and Israel internationally and here at home as well.  Her work is on display in the Volusia County Florida, Arts in Public Places, at the New Smyrna Beach Public Library, and the Daytona Beach Museum of Arts and Sciences.  Working as a full time professional artist since 1998, Deborah has 298 works of art held by individuals and private collectors across the United State, Europe, and the Middle East.

  • Blog Development Continues

Development of "MyStudioWorkshop.com" a new blog for Deborah is delayed because of computer problems experienced by the developers.  The blog is in development in response to suggestions received from  website visitors and Deborah's continuing effort to make DBElmquist.com more interesting and useful to users.  When ready blog article categories will include painting supports, oil paints and mediums, oil painting techniques and methods, and "How-To" articles on methods of canvas stretching, sizing, and priming.

"We have not been able to move forward with the inauguration of the blog or even set a date yet for this upgrade yet," said Dave Elmquist, TCS, Inc. webmaster. "We are working with our ISP to correct some issues related to server set up and program installation all of which we expect to have completed very soon now."  "The newly created content and features will ultimately add new value of our website and the new blog.  It really depends upon how quickly we can put this new idea together and be sure that all the links work correctly."

"Given the fact that I have had an increase in the numbers of people signing up for my classes to learn the Classic style of painting, and the number of emails and phone calls have also been on the rise with questions about the Classic styles, I think that the addition of a blog will help to provide instructional information and material for those interested in the methods of the Old Masters," Deborah said.

DBElmquist.com was created to support and promote the contemporary realism style for which Deborah is known.  It is the place to go to for those who want to know more about Deborah and to see samples of her paintings. The website also features the fine art galleries that carry Deborah's works, introducing the gallery staff members, and providing gallery contact information.

"There seems to be a resurgence of interest in the classic style and classical realism these days based upon our gallery visits," Deborah said.  "Perhaps we can help art lovers to better understand the classical style and to become more knowledgeable about art in general by describing in grater detail just what the classical style is and to discuss the various "schools" of classical painting including the Flemish, Dutch, French, and Italian painters, and what I call the neoclassical Russians painters.  The blog will provide a forum for discussing classical art in general and classical realism pacifically. A standard website is not easily built around discussions and perhaps shouldn't be. Mixing purpose and focus of the website with a blog leads to reader confusion I think.  But, the website and the blog can work together well"
